Mumia Abu Jamal, internationally known activist, political
prisoner and award winning journalist, is being put in danger by
medical neglect and other abuse by Pennsylvania's prison system.
On 30 March, Mumia suffered a life-threatening medical emergency
and had to be rushed to hospital. After being held
incommunicado for about 24 hours, family members were permitted
to visit. Wadiya Jamal, Mumia's wife, sent an
Open Letter
on 5 April about his medical condition. He was transported back
to the prison infirmary despite not ever seeing a diabetes
specialist and without a diagnosis of the cause of his diabetic
shock, or a treatment plan. Doctors and the prison know that
inadequate or delayed treatment of diabetes can be deadly.
A National Day of Action for Mumia was called last Friday 10
April with protests around the USA to press for urgent medical
treatment.
Mumia has been imprisoned for more than 33 years, 30 of them in
solitary confinement on Pennsylvania’s death row. He was wrongly
convicted for killing a police officer in 1982, despite evidence
of his innocence. He has been fighting for his life and for
others in prison as a jailhouse lawyer ever since.
