Undocumented migrants who have occupied ULB and VUB university sites and the Beguinage church in Brussels for several weeks have been on hunger strike for three days, the Union des Sans-papiers for Regularization (USPR). announced on Tuesday.

The occupants demand the establishment of clear regularization criteria and the establishment of a commission to process regularization requests, with priority given to them.

The USPR, a movement that includes the 700 occupants of the ULB, the VUB and the Beguinage, said that the hunger strike was decided after the failure of "dozens of actions and rallies in Art-Lois, the last of which led to the arbitrary arrest of nearly 60 occupants ”, after the failure“ of a meeting with the Secretary of State for Asylum and Immigration, Sammy Mahdi ”, and after the " relentless distortions of the press". It also denounces "racist attacks by Jong NVA and Nation on ULB and VUB" and "the silence of academics in the face of these attacks".

Yet “undocumented people represent a vital structural foundation to ensure our common daily life. They are the driving force in several key and shortage sectors (construction, food, cleaning, etc.), ”argues the USPR. "Being undocumented in Belgium today means participating in Belgian political and economic life".

by Bruxelles News

mai 25, 2021
